The evocatively named Les Hâtes is one of the best lieu-dit terroirs in Santenay. Lamy’s tiny 0.67-hectare plot is in the heart of the climat, in the original walled vineyard. The owner in the 19th century was M. Duvault-Blochet, who also owned a certain Domaine de la Romanée-Conti at that time (a little insight into how highly this vineyard has been historically rated). This wine comes mainly from massale vines that were selected from the vineyards of d’Angerville and Henri Boillot, and planted on quality rootstock in 1999. These vines always produce very small berries and bunches. Lamy’s reds are now one of the rare examples of Burgundies that are flying under the radar. This is lovely.

The 2023 Santenay Clos des Hâtes has a touch more fruit intensity compared to the Chassagne Goujonne, perfumed redcurrant and cranberry with damp loamy soil tucked underneath and wild hedgerow. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, dark berry fruit mixed with a light peppery element originating from the 80% whole bunch.” 88 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

A more vertical nose – but still with width. There’s a freshness to these high-toned aromatics. Mouth-filling, not the cushion of the Chassagne. The finish is more frank, with faintly powdery last tannins. Clean, pretty, finishing flavours.” Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report
